Geography

At our school, we teach Geography in a way that nurtures our pupils' curiosity about the world around them, from their local environment to global landscapes. Our curriculum is structured to provide a progressive learning experience from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Upper Key Stage 2.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, we focus on our local area and the UK, with a light touch on the wider world and continents. This local-first approach helps young learners relate to their immediate surroundings before expanding their horizons.

As pupils progress to Lower Key Stage 2, they delve deeper into the UK as a region and conduct detailed studies of specific countries. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of geographical concepts within familiar contexts.

In Upper Key Stage 2, the curriculum shifts towards conceptual geographical themes and includes an exciting study of Wonders of the World, broadening pupils' global perspectives.

Exploring the Geography Curriculum

Our Geography curriculum is structured around two interconnected thematic cycles, ensuring comprehensive coverage of both physical and human geography:

Cycle A: Physical Geography

  • Explore the Earth's physical features and natural forces shaping our planet

  • Topics include landforms, weather, climate, ecosystems, and geological processes

  • Develop appreciation for the complexity and wonder of the natural environment

Cycle B: Human Geography

  • Examine how human activities and settlements interact with the natural environment

  • Topics include urbanization, population distribution, economic activities, and cultural landscapes

  • Foster awareness of our role as stewards of the planet

By alternating between these cycles, pupils gain a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of physical and human aspects of Geography.

Supporting Your Child's Geography Learning

  • Use maps, globes, and digital mapping tools to discover new places and plan adventures

  • Watch age-appropriate documentaries about different countries, landscapes, and cultures

  • Read books and magazines that showcase the diversity of our world

  • Encourage curiosity by asking and answering questions about the places you visit or learn about

By showing an interest and enthusiasm for geography, you can inspire a lifelong love of learning about our fascinating world in your child.
