Miss Ferguson

In Reception, our main aim is to help children become curious, confident, independent, and strong learners. We believe that play is crucial for their growth and learning.

Throughout the year, we plan lots of fun activities covering various topics to ensure children have a great learning experience. We follow their interests as much as possible and adjust our plans accordingly. Children take part in both teacher-led and child-led activities, indoors and outdoors, to help them learn and enjoy themselves as they work towards their goals. In the mornings, we focus on reading, writing, and maths skills, while afternoons cover other subjects through creative topics and ongoing activities.

Reception Long Term Plan

Outdoor Learning

We believe in outdoor learning regardless of the weather. It not only enhances children's understanding of the world but also motivates them to learn. We have daily outdoor learning sessions in our outdoor classroom, and we'll be outside in all weather conditions. Please ensure your child is appropriately dressed for the weather, such as wearing a warm coat, hat, and gloves in winter, and a sun hat and sunscreen in summer. We ask that you provide a pair of wellingtons and a puddle suit to keep in school.

PE Kit

Children will have PE once a week in the afternoon. To save time, they should come to school wearing their PE kit on their PE day. Our PE kit consists of a blue or white T-shirt or polo shirt, black or navy shorts or jogging bottoms and trainers. Children should wear their school jumper over their PE kit. Parents will receive notification of their child's PE day through Class Dojo. PE days may change occasionally, but we will keep you informed.

Please note that for safety reasons, no jewellery is permitted during PE and sporting activities and must be removed.

Our PE day is a Thursday.
Class Dojo
Each class has its own Class Dojo page where teachers post regular updates about class activities. Important messages and information will also be shared on Class Dojo.

Reading
We use the Read Write Inc. program to teach phonics. Children learn to recognise letter sounds, blend them to read words and sentences.

Homework
Once settled in Reception, we will start sending home reading tasks in children’s book bags regularly. Reading books are changed weekly. Additionally, children will bring home a weekly Storytime sharing book for you to read to them.

We encourage you to listen to your child read their word book at least four times a week to improve fluency and you read the story book to the child as often as possible.
